Personal development, health and physical education

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.
  • Dance

Dance

Years 9 and 10 Elective Dance

The aim of the dance Years 7 to 10 syllabus is for students to experience, understand value and enjoy dance as an artform through the interrelated study of the performance, composition and appreciation of dance.

Year 11 Dance

In the preliminary course, students study dance as an artform with core studies in the interrelated components of performance, composition and appreciation. The knowledge that students gain in Year 11 provides the fundamentals of dance as an artform and is implicit in the content for Year 12.

In the Higher School Certificate course, students continue their study of dance as an artform. They continue core study in the three core components. Students also undertake an in-depth study of dance in one of the major study components, either performance, composition and appreciation. The three core study components are each allocated 20 precent of time, and the major study is allocated 40 precent.

Extra-Curricular Dance

Years 7 and 8 Dance

Years 7 and 8 Dance is a lunchtime program run by senior dance students. The senior dance students teach a range of dance styles such as; lyrical, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop and musical theatre. Students develop their dance skills and familiarise themselves performing.

Dance Ensemble

The dance ensemble is the school's representative dance troupe. They rehearse during sport time every week, and audition to be a part of this dance group. The dance ensemble represents the school in the synergy dance festival, celebrating the arts, school spectacular and other various dance.

Hip-Hop Dance Group

The Hip-Hop dance group is run in collaboration with Miss Sands and students. The students rehearse at lunch times and represent MHS in the ‘Bring It On' Dance Competition.

MHS Sport

MHS Sports Coordinator is Miss Thratthabeusy

Sport at Mitchell High School is for every level of competitor who wants to enjoy new experience with their friends and fellow students. Sport is a mandatory requirement for the Record of School Achievement (RoSA) Certificate. Mitchell High School offers plenty of opportunities for students to be involved.
