Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.
Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.
In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Earth and Environmental Science
- Extension Science
- Investigating Science
- Physics.
In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.
Contribution for Science Subjects
This year your child will be studying one (or more) courses from the Science Faculty. The study of these courses will involve the use of a range of teaching and learning materials for the production and construction of relevant practical experiments, especially with the use of model building.
Mitchell High School Science teachers often use model building as a teaching strategy, as it provides several key benefits for student learning. Model building enriches the learning experience and helps bridge the gap between theory and practice. It also creates a dynamic learning environment that supports various aspects of student development and understanding in Science.
As participation in practical lessons is a compulsory component of all the Science courses and is an assessment requirement, the introduction of a course contribution will provide the school with the funds to assist with the purchasing of materials necessary for use by the students in these subjects. All monies requested will be used solely to help with the purchase of consumable materials in Years 7-12.
Non-participation in practical lessons will impact on the achievement of practical outcomes for successful course development and completion.
Contribution for Science Subjects 2025
For students in Years 7-10 the course contribution is $10.
For students in Years 11 and 12 the course contribution will be $10 per science subject as a $35 contribution for Edrolo.
Please contact the school if you have any questions.
