Year 6 into Year 7 Enrolment

Use the school finder tool to locate your local high school School finder

In NSW government schools, applying to move from primary school to high school is a 2-step process that starts with an Expression of Interest. Visit the moving to high school page to learn more about the process.

The EOI and enrolment process

Expression of Interest (EOI)
During Year 6, parent/carer(s) complete an online EOI form through their primary school or the Department of Education's Year 7 enrolment portal.
School Selection
The EOI allows you to indicate which high school(s) you would like your child to attend.
Enrolment Application
After submitting the EOI and it has been assessed, the chosen high school(s) will issue an official enrolment application.
Placement Offer
A place will then be offered at a government high school, often your local high school, after assessment of the application.
High schools review
High school review expressions of interest in order of preference. All eligible students are entitled to enrol at their local high school. If a school can accommodate your preference, they will make an offer to enrol your child and provide you with an enrolment application to complete. Visit online enrolment to see the status of your expression of interest.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find information about high schools?
Your child is entitled to enrol at their local high school. Use the School finder tool to locate your local high school.

More information about the different types of high schools is available in English and community languages within the Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government school booklet.
Can I apply for a high school outside my local area?
You can submit an expression of interest to any high school.

If the demand for local enrolment exceeds the number of places available, out-of-area enrolments will not be available.
What happens after a school offers a place for my child?
You must enrol directly with the high school by completing an online application via the high school’s enrolment page or submitting a paper-based application form to the high school.
What happens if my child’s expression of interest is declined by the high school?
If your expression of interest is declined, the school may place you on a waiting list and inform you if a place becomes available. Your expression of interest will be automatically forwarded to your next preference for assessment. If all of your preferences are unable to be accommodated, you can enrol at your local high school.
What happens if I decline an offer made by the high school?
If you decline an offer to an out-of-area high school, we will assume that you require a place in your local high school and ask you to complete an enrolment application for that school.

School contributions and elective subject contributions

School contributions are optional contributions the school requests from parents and carers to enhance educational programs.

Principals determine the level of voluntary school contributions in line with published departmental advice and in consultation with their school communities.

The payment of voluntary school contributions is at the discretion of parents and carers.

Schools must not deny any student the opportunity to meet syllabus requirements because of non-payment of voluntary school contributions.

Elective subject contributions are those the school requests from parents and carers for elective subjects in which the student is enrolled, for resources that go beyond the minimum requirements of the curriculum.

For more information, see voluntary school contributions on the Department of Education's website.
